Fashion Week Berlin 2020 – REVIEW

Fashion Week Berlin is the start signal for the fashion weeks around the globe. At this time, everything is about fashion. Here you get all the information about the highlights, trends and the engagement of the designers regarding sustainability.

What makes me happy at Berlin Fashion Week is that the topic of sustainability has been given a big part. Many brands strive to make their contribution and take responsibility for sustainability. In addition to the shows, there is also the Neonyt. A fair in which only sustainable fashion labels are exhibited. The message from Neonyt is clear – Change Fashion Together. Here you will find an overview of the individual shows, the brands and what they do for sustainability.

Danny Reinken

The Berlin fashion label is characterized by lush and individual shapes and detailed embellishments. This year the collection included colors like orange, mustard yellow, blue or purple. Patterns such as animal- or floral-motifs and graphically checkered fabrics or puff pleat sleeves and a lot of chiffons were seen on the catwalk.

Sustainability: It is important for the young designer to create his garments as sustainably and environmentally consciously as possible. Fair production of clothing is very important to them. That is why they check exactly where their fabrics come from in order to meet the quality requirements. The collections are produced exclusively in Germany.

Andrea Steiner from fashion blog Strawberries 'n' Champagne based in Switzerland shows you the highlights of Berlin Fashion Week and the collection from Danny Reinke.

Irene Luft

The Munich designer’s studio is one of the most renowned and largest German haute couture fashion houses. Her collections combine a modern, feminine and romantic style with a touch of progressiveness. This year on the catwalk the colors ranged from black to pastel to berry tones. Garments in leather and chiffon, as well as floral patterns and frills, adorned the collections.

Cashmere Victim

The young German label from Konstanze Maage is known for its unusual and printed cashmere. Her collection this year includes garments such as bomber jackets, hoodies, and oversized turtlenecks. The leo-plant pattern, a mix of leopard pattern and geometric design or the batik pattern adorned the catwalk. In addition to the colors black and white, grass green, petrol, orange, and red were also used.

Sustainability: Cashmere Victim has high quality and modern collections. The focus is on treating people and the environment with respect. They produce their collections in two family businesses in Italy. The garments are fair trade with organic packaging.

Lena Hoschek

The Austrian fashion designer was inspired by their time at Vivienne Westwood in London and through Hollywood icons from the 40s and 50s. This year’s collection featured a bohemian mix of artisanal materials and folklore. Her clothes combine different cultures and traditions. From the beginning, the love of craftsmanship has been huge for Hoschek, what she lives out in her collection. Earth tones and the color red in all shades can be found in her clothing.

Sustainability: At Lena Hoschek you will find slow fashion and sustainability from the selection of the fabric to the sale. They use natural materials and prefer European companies for the supply of fabrics, yarns, and accessories. The label attaches importance to sustainable and ethical suppliers. They demand transparency from their partners because they want to know where by whom and how the fabrics are produced. They also try to avoid unnecessary transport routes. The same goes for waste. For example, they also use the fabrics from samples and reuse packaging material several times. For Lena Hoschek, quality has a high price: humanity, trust, responsibility, and sustainability.

Rebekka Ruétz

The message from Austrian designer Rebekka Ruétz is clear. She would like to draw attention to climate change and our responsibility to the earth. In the collections, you will find colors that refer to our planet, the environment, life and the problems we have right now. She uses colors such as electrifying blue, deep-water turquoise, glass green, raven black, gold, curry yellow, burgundy, buttermilk white, stone gray and cotton candy.

Sustainability: They have a separate line called YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT in which they create fairly manufactured and multi-certified textiles at a high level. The garments are marked with different certifications such as GOTS, Confidence in Textile, Fair Wear, Organic Blended, Approved Vegan.

DSTM

The brand designs bodywear, lingerie, loungewear and swimwear that are made from ecological fabrics of the highest quality. Not an ordinary walk was shown on the catwalk but an impressive dance in the beautiful dark clothes.

Sustainability: The entire collection is made from ecological, high-performance fabrics and is OEKO-Tex certified. This means that all components of a piece of clothing or an accessory, i.e. every button and thread, have been tested for harmful substances by an independent institute and the article is therefore human-ecological.

KXXK

For several years, the Cologne designer Kilian Kerner has been inspiring many people with his collections. His designs are characterized by bright colors, asymmetrical cuts, and clear lines. In this year’s collection, he brought his childhood and his interpretation of the fairy tales to the catwalk. Oversized cuts, long coats, and cozy fake fur hats were worn. Details such as frills, ruffles, and cords as well as glitter lipstick made for a fairytale look.

Marcel Ostertag

His fashion label is one of the crowd-pullers at Berlin Fashion Week. The designer gets his inspiration from the 70s and 80s. In addition to colorful patterns a la Gianni Versace and fake fur, you could see many wonderful details such as fringes, glitter, and frills on his collection on the catwalk.

Sustainability: Since his first collection, it has been important to him to ensure complete transparency of all production and design processes. His clothes are made in Germany. He represents idealistic values such as sustainable production, high-quality fabrics, and fair production conditions in each of his garments. He is thus setting an example against the fast fashion industry. He has launched as well a sustainably produced sweatshirt line.
