Everything started in Peru in 2000 when the founders explored the cotton industry in Peru. They were shocked by the pollution and poverty this industry creates. They knew they have to do something. After a while, Kuyichi was founded and with them a sustainable jeans brand.
The name Kuyichi comes from the Peruvian god of the rainbow, who brings color and positivity in society. The name fits perfectly for their corporate culture, which means creating something that is fun and enjoyable for everyone in the supply chain.
The products are made with materials like 100% organic cotton which is free from pesticides and other chemical toxins, recycled cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel, linen, or vegetable-tanned leather.
Recycled cotton is made from waste material cotton that is grown, shredded, and spun into new yarn. This saves water and reduces energy and chemicals. For recycled polyester, they use plastic bottles.
Tencel is made from FSC-certified eucalyptus wood pulp, which means they only use eucalyptus from forests that have been cultivated sustainably. Linen is made from flax. A plant that is uncomplicated, well-growing, and uses fewer pesticides.
If they use leather, they only work with vegetable-tanned leather. That means, in the process of making this leather, it reduces chemicals like heavy metals and other harmful substances.
These sustainable jeans that I am wearing call Nora and are made of 99% Gots-certified organic cotton and 1% elastane.
